Jiu Jitsu
Great Jiu Jitsu instruction shouldn't make you feel small. My goal is to be the kind of instructor whose technique makes your jaw drop — and whose coaching style makes you feel like you belong. Whether you're stepping on the mat for the first time or looking to sharpen specific skills, this is a space where you can grow at your pace.

What Current Students Are Saying
“Melissa is always there to answer questions and make everyone feel welcome.”
— White Belt Student“What kept me coming back was the community of learning - I love how everyone pitches in during drilling to get the moves right. Everyone being encouraging and supportive to one another is a huge plus too. Just a great environment for learning.”
— Blue Belt Student“I love that there’s more of a focus on doing the basics well vs trying to do all new, fancy moves I will never remember.
Drilling the basics really helped me a lot!”

Still have questions? Take a look at the FAQ or reach out anytime. If you’re feeling ready, let’s get something on the schedule!

For No Gi training: wear compression clothing (compression shirt, leggings). You can also wear close fitting shorts, **be sure they don’t have pockets or anything that could catch someone’s finger/toe in training.
For Gi training: wear the No Gi baselayer of compression clothing (compression shirt, spandex shorts/leggings). If you have one, you’ll wear a gi over the top of that. If not? We have lenders that you can wear and wash.

Being ready is a choice, not a feeling! If you are interested in trying jiu jitsu out, I’m happy to tell you, you are ready!
Be brave enough to fill out my contact form, and then answer the phone when I call. That’s it!

I encourage everyone to do a couple private or semi-private sessions early on so you get to our class with a few skills already. If you’re brand new, I’d start with 2-3 sessions for basics.
After that, class is a great place for most of my students! The ones who really commit to the private sessions in addition to normal class are individuals who enjoy learning at an accelerated pace, that want more than what they get in class, or those with restrictive schedules, who can’t make it to class and need training to fit their busy life! Both are great ways to use private training and semi-private training in place or addition to classes.
Special case, or still not sure? Book a consult, and we will break it down and figure it out!

The short answer is - you choose what works best for you. Here are 3 levels of participation to think about:
skip the days completely - if you have painful or rough days, it’s ok to take them off
train light that week, and skip the worst day - drill light, sit during the sparring, take rest when needed
train through it - take your meds, prep your collection method well, and keep it pushing
I have a post on my “Learn” tab that goes into lots of detail if you need more help.

Nope!
While the majority of my efforts in Jiu Jitsu are to make the mats a space that is inviting and compelling for women, I also train adult men and children of all ages (3+).
The techniques we use for women’s class are exactly the same techniques for kid’s class, co-ed class, and the same I’d teach an adult male if he was training with me. There are differences is movement based on body type for sure, but not sex/gender.
Want to train with me, but you aren’t a woman? Fill out my consult form! Let’s get on the mat.
